Miley Cyrus’ chose to release her new single and music video, ‘Used to Be Young’, released on August 25th. She was very specific about releasing the song on that particular day, as she stated on Entertainment Tonight. “This particular day has historically been important to me personally and in my career,” she said.
The song is a reflection on her wild past, its controversy, and her “immature” phase. Her transition from Hannah Montana into her twenties was when she started to leave the innocent Disney star era. That is what fans seem to think of mostly when they listen back to the song and its well-thought-out lyrics. The song becomes emotional as Miley starts crying towards the end of the music video. During an interview, it was reported that she was looking at her mother while she sang.
Some lyrics of the song, like “I know I used to be crazy, I know I used to be fun/You say I used to be wild, I say I used to be young” share this perspective about her “wild days.” Her lyrics are filled with emotion, not just for herself but also for those who grew up with her or watched her, whether on the Disney Channel or through her music career. After leaving Disney, Miley released ‘Wrecking Ball’, which caused a lot of dispute. It represented something that did not align with who she was best known as, Hannah Montana.
Miley’s songs were aimed at erasing her entire Hannah Montana look from 2012-2014, just after Disney’s ‘Hannah Montana’ ended. She mentioned that during the show, she had to be an adult rather than a child most of the time. “I started to grow out of that character a little bit.” she said. As she grew older than her character on the show, she started to develop an identity crisis. She made an effort to abandon that stage in her life and find herself. A few even claim to have heard Hannah Montana in a particular part of her new song due to the high note when her voice become deeper and more advanced throughout the years.
The song “Used to be Young” is both an incredible and emotional listen for her fans. Miley Cyrus’ life and past were revealed to fans through the nostalgic feel of the lyrics and a better look into her past. Miley’s Mickey Mouse shirt in the music video made many think of her Disney days while listening.
