Black History Month Showcase: Dance, Art, and History Collide

On Tuesday, February 27th, North Springs hosted its very own The Black History Month Showcase, organized by Dr. Patterson, of dancers, singers, speakers, and live participants e that left the students amazed, speechless and filled with joy.

The start of the show featured the Black Student Association President Aniya Sytsema giving an opening speech that really drove home on how Black history is not just a month on a calendar but about the movement of black people, both the good and bad.

The very first of the acts featured North Springs’ very own Dance company. The company gave a lovely visual of African dance with a mix of modern dance. After the dance company’s last beat, the next presentation was a young black female student with a poem about black women and their beauty. The poem gave everyone a deep view about what she thought what about black beauty.

After that there two impressive groups of dancers. Between the acts, two people from the Black Student Association held a slideshow presentation about the of a Black history story that was left untold and forgotten: The History of the Town of Oscarville, currently submerged under the location of Lake Lanier.

At the end of the presentation, the two Black History Association speakers called up six people from the audience and participated in a version of the game show “Family Feud” with the topic about the most popular Black movie. Contenders included Boyz in da Hood, The Color Purple, and Friday among the contenders, with Five Heartbeats declared the winner.

Following the hilarity of the game show, a young lady came up to the stage and gave a piece of her mind about how she thinks the world treats black people. Finally, the show case ended with a student who gave an uplifting and catchy rap that had every student in the room rapping along.
