After a 4 hour-long bus ride to the Science Olympiad regional competition held at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, GA, North Springs’ two teams brought home trophies for third and fifth place overall on the weekend of March 1.
The FOMAS-sponsored trip allowed 26 students to compete and ultimately win 19 medals in 15 of 23 events.
Events at Science Olympiad are topical: some require that partners answer multiple-choice and free response questions; others require that competitors build structures and simple machines prior, such as Boomilever and Scrambler.

Teams that placed first through fourth all received medals for their success; numerous ribbons were awarded as well for those who achieved fifth through tenth place.
The team’s sponsor, AP Biology teacher Kristin Jackson, has only two words to say: “GO LASERSHARKS!”
The lasershark has become the unofficial mascot for North Spring’s competing science teams after its use in another science competition resulted in unusual but welcome success. See photos below as evidence for the proud donning of lasershark-hats among team members.
Olympiad competitors are currently hard at work preparing for the upcoming state competition to be held at Southern Poly March 22.
Science Olympiad is a national non-profit that sponsors tournaments with the mission of encouraging student engagement and future careers in science.
